Katie McCormack Cooperating with Authorities While Male Friends Lawyer Up and Stepmother Judge Ashlee Cole Deactivates Social Media Following Disappearance of Nolan Xavier Wells on Horn Island

An active investigation into the disappearance of 18-year-old Mississippi college athlete Nolan Xavier Wells has taken a complex legal turn. While a female companion, Katie McCormack, is actively cooperating with law enforcement, a group of male friends who accompanied Wells to the island have reportedly retained legal counsel. Adding to the local scrutiny, Ashlee Cole, a prominent area judge and stepmother to one of the friends in question, has deactivated her social media presence following intense public focus on the case. This development arrives as authorities confirm that a body has been discovered in the search zone on Horn Island.

Nolan Xavier Wells—a star wide receiver who previously excelled at Ocean Springs High School and is currently a rising sophomore at Southwest Mississippi Community College—traveled to Horn Island with a group of friends on Saturday, July 4. The barrier island, located off the Mississippi Gulf Coast, is a highly popular destination for holiday boaters. Wells was last seen on the island at approximately 3:00 p.m. Saturday. According to statements, his friends returned to the mainland later that evening under the assumption that Wells had secured a boat ride home with someone else. While Wells' cell phone was somehow returned to his family, the young athlete never arrived home.
Following a massive multi-agency search effort, a National Park Service ranger spotted a body at approximately 8:40 a.m. on Monday. The remains were located on the northwest end of Horn Island, precisely near the western tip where Wells was last seen. The Jackson County Coroner’s Office has taken custody of the remains, and a formal positive identification is currently pending.

As Jackson County Sheriff John Ledbetter and search teams continue their investigation, a clear divide in cooperation has emerged among those who were on the island with Wells. McCormack, one of the individuals present during the July 4th outing, is currently communicating openly with investigators to help reconstruct the timeline of events. In contrast, the male friends who returned to the mainland without Wells have stopped direct interviews and secured defense attorneys. Outcry and online speculation intensified after local Judge Ashlee Cole—the stepmother of one of the male companions—deactivated her public profiles and accounts as community scrutiny surrounding the group's actions grew.

Sheriff Ledbetter stated that his department remains in constant communication with Wells’ family as they await definitive forensic results from the coroner. In a push for answers, Nolan's mother, Christine Wonsley, has turned to social media to urge anyone who visited Horn Island on Saturday, July 4, to review their personal photos and videos. Even background footage from the beach or passing boats could hold vital clues to establishing exactly what happened to the college athlete before he vanished.
