9-Year-Old King Overton Dies Following Medical Emergency at SwimRVA Summer Camp in Henrico County; GoFundMe Launched to Support Grieving Family

HENRICO COUNTY, VA — A devastating tragedy has shaken a Virginia community after a 9-year-old boy died following an apparent drowning during a summer day camp session on Monday afternoon.

The victim has been identified by his family as King Overton. According to Henrico County authorities, officers and emergency personnel were dispatched to SwimRVA-North, located in the 317 block of North Wilkinson Road, at approximately 2:30 p.m. on Monday, June 15, 2026, following urgent reports of a medical emergency.

Camp staff discovered Overton unresponsive in the pool during supervised swimming activities and immediately initiated CPR. SwimRVA officials stated that staff maintained lifesaving efforts until paramedics and Henrico County firefighters arrived on the scene to take over. Overton was rushed to a local hospital, where he tragically succumbed to his injuries.

In the wake of the loss, the boy's mother, LaTaisha Johnson, shared her profound grief on social media. "King was our everything. He was the love of our lives, our heart, our joy, and our reason for so much," Johnson wrote. "The pain we are feeling right now is unbearable and there are no words that can truly describe what we’re going through."

To assist the family with unexpected memorial and burial expenses, relatives launched a GoFundMe campaign titled “Home going service for King O.” The fundraiser describes King as a vibrant, witty, and joyful child who loved music, cars, playing Roblox, and fishing with his father. By late Wednesday, the community had rallied to raise more than $19,000 toward a $20,000 goal.

Following the incident, SwimRVA officials canceled all camp sessions for the remainder of the week, and the SwimRVA-North facility remained closed on Tuesday.

The Henrico County Police Department’s Homicide Unit is currently leading the investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death, while the local medical examiner's office works to officially determine the cause and manner of death. County officials have not yet released additional details or indicated whether any charges are being considered.
